Chapter 51: Sharing Our Story

Chapter 51: Sharing Our Story

October 9, 2025

Today is the day I hit “publish” on this website and announced the official launch of The Soggy Sandwich on my LinkedIn account.

This idea for this website came to me not even six months ago – when mom was totally healthy and you know, still alive.  I was chatting with a friend over coffee about the isolation, fear, and anger that I’ve felt over the course of helping dad to make sure mom is ok over the past few years.  She was the person who first suggested that I consider sharing my story with others through a blog.

I’ve always enjoyed the process of writing and I’ve kept a journal at many points in my life.  But putting your personal thoughts out for the world to see – now that’s something entirely different.

Nevertheless, I spoke with mom and dad who supported the idea and slowly, I thought about names, I bought a domain…and I started to build the structure and design of this website.  In August, I got really serious and worked on my first few blog articles.  In doing some research, I realized that September is World Alzheimer’s Month and suddenly, I was working towards a September 1 deadline so I could be ready to share our story with the world!

And then.  August 28 happened.  Mom was gone without any warning, and my heart was on the floor, shattered into millions of pieces.

Initially, I thought I would just abandon the idea entirely.  I couldn’t imagine surviving, much less having the energy to be creative on an ongoing basis.  But two things happened.  One, the East Indian part of my brain insisted that since I’d already spent the money for a domain and a year’s worth of hosting, I’d better get my value!  (Ha.) Secondly, I went to a number of events over Edmonton 2025 Start-Up Week and kept hearing over and over again, “The time will never be right – sometimes you just have to do it.”

So, here it is world, and here’s a secret to go along with it: I’ve never felt so scared in my life.  Letting other people view and/or pass judgement on anything you’ve created is like holding your breath for forever.  You just never know how it’s going to land.

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained, as the old cliché goes.  I sincerely hope this proves to be a helpful resource to others on this path.

SPEAKING OF – I’m trying something new in response to some website feedback. Here is the trial of a (moderated) ability for readers to post comments. Let’s see how this goes. 🙂
